Birmingham High Speed Chase

My Rant of the week. The Birmingham high speed chase. See it Here http://videos.al.com/birmingham-news/2009/05/birmingham_police_beating_vide_1.html. There is a reason why most Police departments have banned high speed chases. I will be using this video for my law enforcement driver training class. In all my years I have not seen such lack of common sense in a chase. There is also a lack of co ordination between the officers, at times it seem as a personal race as to who would coral the perpetrator. It also disclosed a total lack of communication between all of the departments involved. On several occasions the officers had to take evasive action to keep from hitting each other. God knows what we would be able to see from the other in car cameras. I am glad that the officer that was hit did not receive permanent damage. However once again, weather by lack of training or just caught up in the moment the officer put himself in the most dangerous position to deploy the tack strip. When we were developing a law enforcement program back in the 80's one of the things we observed was that even the most experience officers blood pressure and pulse rates went through the roof as soon as the siren was turned on. It takes some serious training and devotion to control the feelings that are stirred from being in the line of fire. 5 officers have been fired for their loss of control and beating the unconscious suspect. The system failed these individuals by not providing them with proper training and counseling. The officers were fired as someone had edited the video and some superiors are now being investigated for knowing of the evidence tampering.  The most interesting thing I have not been able to find why Anthony Warren ran in the first place.
